J-M Tremblay’s Special SG Jr.

“I just finished my build today. It is awesome! It’s made out of very good quality tonewood and as your name suggests, the kit is made with precision. When I received the kit, I didn’t really know what pickup/control configuration I wanted. I decided to go with two classic PAF humbuckers, three-way switch, and single volume and tone … simple, but I have everything I need! I did the finish with oil. It keeps the texture of the wood, which I particularly like—mahogany. The pickguard is my own design. It is a mix of the classic “full-face” SG standard, “half-face” of the 61′ SG, and the pickguard of the 1998 SG deluxe. I love the look and the tone of bigsby vibratos. And this one makes no exception! This guitar looks great, plays great AND sounds amazing!

Here are some pictures of it.”

Tony’s Cherry SG Jr.

“Hey Phil,

Here are some photos of my recent build, your SG Jr. I am quite pleased with how the guitar fell together. The neck is lovely, straight and true, I have not had to adjust the neck at all. And the guitar is very light and reasonant. I’ve always loved the look of these guitars and the Heritage Cherry finish came out as I had hoped. She is a real screamer with the lollar P-90!

Thanks, Tony”

Erik Hansen’s SG Jr. Build

White SG Jr Guitar

Erik wrote to me a while back telling me about a guitar that he had years ago that he wished he had kept. It was an SG Jr., cherry stained. He wanted that guitar but updated and this time in a beautiful rich white.  so he bought a kit from us and went about building a legend. He documented the process.

And apparently the Lollar pick ups are fantastic.

This is a great read on how to make one of our kits.

Take a read. here’s a link to Erik’s build blog.

Sean’s Sensational lil Red 59

HI.. finally done.

Yes it took a few years to get her completed but I’ve had her up and running for about a month now.  I haven’t played any of my other guitars (save my archtop) since then.  Although my last Carved Top was Stolen in 1982, I do think this one sounds better.  Band members and fans love it as well.
Cheers
Sean

Tim’s Totally Terrific White Window Wrattle….:)

Hi Phil
Thought I’d send along a photo of my finished Jr. The kit was, as advertised, a dream to build. Everything went together smoothly; the neck/body fit was absolutely precise. A couple of things surprised me in a good way; the neck is described as a baseball shape on your site so I wondered if it would be on the large side. It turns out that it’s a very comfortable size and shape even for someone with smaller hands. The biggest surprise is how good this guitar sounds. I purchased the Seymour Duncan Antiquity P90 that you sell and I really like it. I usually play jazz through the clean channel of a small Blackstar tube amp and this guitar fits the bill. When my wife is out, I crank up the amp and it sounds very snarly. When I switch to the dirty channel, the windows rattle. Seriously though, I expected to end up with a decent guitar but this is WAY beyond decent. It’s fabulous.
The photo has a paper mock up of a decal that I’m getting made up. It says Muffin City custom in honour of two Toronto bands; Martha and The Muffins and a cultish 60’s band called The City Muffin Boy’s. They were kind of like Lou Reed and the Velvet Underground but sadly ,without Andy Warhol promoting them, they remained unknown except for members of Toronto’s art community back then.
Already planning the next build; a T style, no pick guard, natural finish with a Lollar Charlie Christian neck pickup and a regular Tele bridge pu.
Thank for making such a fine product. You guys are off the charts for quality and workmanship.
All the best and Happy Canadian Thanksgiving.
Tim

Dan’s Damn Fine Dangerous Delight…

Hi there – Here a few pics of my SG Jr. build from a few years back. It plays like butter, and resonates like nothing else I’ve ever played. I’ve recommended PGK to anyone interested in rolling their own. Great bones – just like you say!

Named this one the “Les Ismore”. The P90 is an Alnico 2 kit from Stew Mac (8.4k dcr) The bridge is a Pigtail – and the studs and bushings from them are just spectacular. The tone cap was rescued from an old Hammond organ preamp. Wish I had more of em! It was hard (for me anyway) to get an accurate photo of the color. It’s a slightly yellowed white – nitrocellulose that I mixed up here. Thanks again!

lances luscious purple perfect

This is my first guitar kit that I have built. My Precision Telecaster kit was very well done. The grain in the wood is just stunning. It would have been a shame to paint it. I tried to keep the lines in the wood as natural as possible. I sanded it with 800 grit paper. I sprayed several coats of sealer on it. I then started to spray the Translucent Blue on to it. Just want to get this in before I continue. The next time I build one of these I will for sure use wood filler next time. I sprayed  8 layers of the Translucent Blue , The last 2 coats of the blue I sprayed I was trying to get it darker on the outer edges. I left the neck untouched with anything other than lacquer. The neck itself is just a beautiful piece of wood. I sanded it with 12000 grit pads to get it silky smooth. After spraying 10 coats of lacquer. My Translucent Blue body turned to a Plum color. Don’t know why that happened. I sent it off to the guitar shop to get a professional setup done. The intonation on this is perfect. It came out awesome. I plugged it in to my Amplitude 3 used the Supro Amp with a Leslie speaker and it sounds just like Good Times Bad Time. This guitar sounds amazing. I have been nervous about it coming out good. It came out better than I could have hoped for. And the scary thing is, it sounds better than any brand name guitar that I have. Did it cost more to build this than buying a brand name guitar. Yes. Was it worth it, You bet, every penny of it. My next one I build will be an SG.
Thanks so much Phil

Wolfissssshh… crazy with beauty

Phil:

Took some pics yesterday, here are a few of them.  might have to send in a few emails to “meet quota”.  Use what you like.  Thanks again.

Here’s my first Precision build- actually my first ever build!  I like Jerry Garcia’s Wolf- but not a big fan of the body shape.  However I love SGs, so why not…?  I sent Phil a slab of purpleheart for the body blank and PGK did a knockout job adding the beautiful quilted maple cap and shaping the body.  They gave me a “swimming pool” pickup rout and larger control cavity.  I was really impressed with the quality of the wood and the construction.  The neck was particularly well made and a treat to play.  I took a chance on the “59 a bit less” neck cut and am really liking it (I’m used to thinner necks).  My first time gluing in a neck and it went without a hitch.

The thing sounds great both acoustic and plugged in.  It rings and sustains like a grand piano!

Specs:

Lefty SG Jr, quilted maple over purpleheart, mahogany neck
Wudtone finish (amber neck, Goldenrod with a little amber body, clear on the back)
Schaller M6 tuners
Gibson 57 Classics neck and bridge, Dimarzio Super 2 in the middle (coil cut)
Custom tailpiece and pickup switchplate by Scarlet Fire Guitars
Brass pickup plate and nut by Rusch Custom Guitars
Waldo buffer and GGG Blaster (switchable)
On Board Effects Loop (signal out to effects and back to guitar before master volume- switchable)
Freeway 6-way switch
Callaham ABR-1 bridge
Cocobolo knobs by Archipelago Glass

I’ve already ordered my next kit- this one will be a plain vanilla SG Jr rocker- one P-90 and two freekin knobs!

Peace and love from 60’s check this Pelham Blue beauty out.

This is exactly why I love doing what I do… best job in the world. Check out what Jim did with one of our humble lil pieces of wood…:)

Phil,

I wanted to write and thank you for putting out such a fantastic product!  I bought your SG jr kit last fall and was blown away by the quality, craftsmanship and service. I finished her in an antiqued Pelham Blue nitro with a Lollar dogear p90 and I have to say that it has become my absolute go-to guitar so I thought I’d send some pics of the build.
Can’t wait to start my next one!
Peace,
Jim

Duane’s Thunder From Down Under….

Corny title I know, but I had to use it…:)

Precision Guitar Kits’ SG Junior Kit.  Mick Brierley Vintage Spec P90 pickup, Faber Vintage Spec Compensated Aluminum  Bridge, Bourns Pots, Grover Keys, Danish Oil finish.  Superb quality guitar kit and great folks to deal with. Very high on my recommendations list!

My personal take on getting a great vibe out SG Jrs:

(1) There seems to be a tendency to go with small light tuners as these guitars tend to ‘neck dive’ due to the inherent weight imbalance with the neck set way out at the end of the body.  Resist this urge!  Put some mass/weight in the headstock = i.e., full size Grover tuners.  If you want an SG Jr. you have to deal with the neck dive.

(2) Get the best P90 you can afford and be willing to try a few.  8k dc resistance seems to be the sweet spot.

(3) Bridge is critical, so don’t cut corners here.  I tried a few and settled on the aluminum Faber with standard (plated brass) studs.  I’m not big on ‘mystic mojo’ type of stuff but there is definitely a lot more difference than I would have thought between different bridges, especially in the style or type  of the bridge.  Overall I find the solid compensated bridges and adjustable saddle bridges to be in 2 separate classes as far as tone is concerned with the solid bridges way out in front.

(4)  Use good pots and output jack.  I don’t find any sound differences between pots or tone capacitors (more mystic mojo voodoo stuff IMO).  I like the quality of the Bourns conductive polymer pots and they generally have a more even volume taper than carbon pots. I just used a 500v ceramic cap here.  Don’t need the voltage rating but the wire is heavier and easier to deal with.

(5) With the great necks on these kits I set action at 3/32″ clearance of high E string at 12th fret, and 1/8″ (4/32″) clearance of Low E String at 12th fret.  Truss rod adjusted so that when fretting the low E String on 1st and 15th frets simultaneously you have just the very slightest clearance in the middle.  I find nut setup to be critical (but not necessarily the material) and also one of the more difficult to get right, especially if making your own nut from a blank.  I used unbleached camel bone on this one simply because that’s what I had in my little parts box.  Best instruction I’ve seen on making a nut is here:http://www.lenaweelutherie.info/page6/page26/page26.html

(6) Of course all of this is subjective.  Your mileage may vary J  No disputing the quality of the kit though, great bones to work with!

Michael V’s wickedly cool guitar # 2

Hi Phil,

I finally finished this up. I spent the last 4 months working on this whenever i got a free moment. Guitar looks amazing, with the exception of a few dings on the front where i dropped a tool. I’ll fix that soon but i couldn’t wait to get this baby up and running.

It is also an amazing player, and has become one of my favorites! The whole experience is very rewarding to me, this is now my fifth build, and my second Precision and it is amazing how much more i learn each time.

The wood was so nice and the quality was apparent when I first received the kit. The neck fit in perfectly, and the fret work was great. I finished this using Target waterbased laquer. I personally cant stand being around nitro and this is pretty easy on the environment. So far I have had pretty good results with this stuff.

Below are the specs. thanks and looking forward to my next build.

Body & Neck: Mahogany
Fretboard: Rosewood
Electronics:
• Gibson P90 Single Coil Dogear Pickup
• CTS Pots
• Emerson Oil-in-Paper capacitor

Hardware:
• Kluson Plate Tuners
• Wilkinson/Gotoh Adjustable Bridge/Tailpiece
• Tusq XL Nut
• Switchcraft Jack

This is made with this kit…..SG Jr.

Peter’s Cherry Red Swedish Sunset

Good morning Phil.

As promised, here are some pictures on my Kit I bought end of  ast year.

The progress:

  •  I started to dye the body black, sanded it down to make the flames more visual.
  • I tinted the nitro cellulous lacquer with cherry red dye and shot 4-5 layers.
  • Clear coat nitro cellulous around 40 layers, sanded with 800 grit every 5th layer until the last layer which I wet sanded 800 grit, 1200 grit and finally 2000 grit.
  • Then I polished with Meguiars ULTIMATE COMPOUND and waxed it with Meguiars ULTIMATE LIQUID WAX

Hardware:

  •   Bridge and Tailpiece:  TonePros system 2Tuners:
  • Grover Roto-Grip Locking Rotomatics (502 Series)
  • Pickups: Dimarzio Transition (Steve Lukather new signature pickups
  • Nut: Gibson original bone
  • Plastics: Gibson original parts (Bellplate, Volume/tone knobs etc)
  • Electronics: RSG kit with CTS pots, RS Paper and Oil GuitarCap by Jensen, 3-way toggle switch Switchcraft.
  •  Dunlop Straplock system
  • Strings: SIT Power Wound 009-046

It took me some time to get the color as I wanted, in the beginning I dyed the body red but for some reason it turned into brown after a couple of days, think I sanded it down 2 times. This happened twice and therefor I decided to tint the Nitro and that turned out really good.

I like when the color is “sharp” and both the grain and color pops.

Give also Kevin my best regards and once again Thank you very much for top notch body and neck. It wouldn’t be possible to get so good end result without your craftsmanship!
